Project Description

The Challenge>
To renovate and expand the original 3,452 square foot station built in 1930 by 14,000 square feet, maintaining its architectural history and detail, all while remaining in operation. This Clintonville site was very constricted for this size building and the turning radii of the fire apparatus.

The Solution>
We rezoned the property and conducted meetings with the Clintonville Area Commission and the Columbus Historic Resources Commission, addressing their concerns, many of which were reflected in the final design. To deal with the site challenge we staggered design of the floor plan. This allowed for the proper turning radii needed. This project had to be phased to keep the Station in full operation. The two south bays including the second story sleeping rooms as well as the kitchen addition to the west were completed first. The firefighters moved into that area. Then we completed the addition that included the two north bays and sleeping rooms and the renovation of the existing Station. The building was rededicated in December of 2003.
