Indian Trail Elementary School Addition and Renovations and Middle School Entry Canopy Addition

Canal Winchester Local Schools

About This Project

The Canal Winchester Indian Trail Elementary School Addition and Renovation consisted of a 28,008 SF two story west wing addition and a 1,670 SF renovation to the existing building with a focus on transitioning from existing structure to the new addition. The new construction consists of new classrooms, independent learning spaces, a transitional corridor connection and entry area, added kindergarten storage and restroom to an existing classroom, ADA compliant group restroom facilities, new mechanical and electrical rooms, new and renovated playgrounds, an upgraded rain water drainage solution, new fire access roads around the building and to the adjacent Winchester Trail elementary, and an upgrade to the site’s landscaping.

The addition was enlarged within the design phase, providing a long term solution to the district’s quickly growing enrollment while also creating a single building solution for pre-school through second grade within the provided budget. Separate playgrounds were also provided, one for the Preschool, one for the Kindergarten, and one for first and second grade with the first and second grade playground large enough for all four age groups to intermingle, providing opportunities for a more diverse learning experience.

Another part of this project was to provide the Middle School’s main entrance with a covered entry/canopy to shelter up to 30 individuals from the elements. The solution was a 954 SF free standing painted steel structure with a standing seam metal roof, masonry column bases to match the existing building’s masonry base, and a color scheme that matches the new branding graphics the district provided. A new school sign was also provided that was integrated into the new shelter structure. A smaller metal canopy attached to the building over the main entry doors bridges the shelter gap and provides for a more intimate scale transitioning into the building.

Construction began in June of 2023 on the elementary addition and in June of 2024 on the Middle School canopy with both projects completing on time in August of 2024, ready for the beginning of the 2024-25 school year.
