Russ Nature Reserve Comfort Center

Greene County Parks & Trails

This (90) acre park reserve was gifted by Fritz and Delores Russ to Greene County in 2008. The local beekeepers association maintains and manages the on-site apiary. This park also plays host to many annual events, including Pancakes in the Park, Extreme Egg Hunt, and Pumpkin Glow.

The need for a restroom facility was essential. The new facility was designed to pay homage to Fritz and Delores Russ’s original house structure, which was demolished by a tornado in 2019.

Schorr Architects led the design to renovate a 1960s-built, 4,000 SF ranch home donated to the Park District, and convert it into a multi-use venue center. The new facility would be able to serve as a reservable and programming space for the District, and illustrated how a modest single family residence can be transformed into an open concept, and sustainable facility. The design featured an emphasis on energy performance, environmental sustainability and occupant health.

This renovation project was canceled due to a tornado heavily damaging the existing facility, which was subsequently demolished. A new 5,000 SF facility was designed, which featured the same amenities as outlined for the original project. The project was canceled due to funding.
